SWECO SCOOPS FIVE BREEAM AWARDS FOR CHAMPIONING SUSTAINABILITY
Sweco has won five awards at the 2018 BREEAM Awards, which celebrate the achievements of those involved in the specification, design, construction and management of buildings.
The engineering, environment and design consultancy saw off stiff competition from five other businesses to be named Mechanical and Engineering Consultant of the Year at the ceremony on 6th March at Excel London. Sweco’s Zuzana Spicova was also named among the BREEAM Assessors of the Year and two Sweco-designed projects picked up accolades across a range of categories.
In naming Sweco Mechanical and Engineering Consultant of the Year, the judges recognised the business’s integrated approach to embedding sustainability and BREEAM considerations across its projects and teams.
The two Sweco-designed buildings to collect awards were Bloomberg’s new European headquarters and 4 Pancras Square in London’s Kings Cross Central, which took the Commercial Project of the Year awards for Design Stage and Post Construction. Sweco provided buildings services consultancy and BREEAM assessment for both projects, which achieved BREEAM scores of 98.5 and 88.1 per cent respectively.
The Bloomberg headquarters achieved the highest design-stage total ever achieved by any major commercial development, and the building also went on to win the Western Europe Project of the Year.
Senior Sustainability Consultant Zuzana Spicova scooped her award in recognition for having achieved the highest average BREEAM assessment score in 2017.
Alex Drysdale, operations director at Sweco UK, said: “A well-integrated approach to embedding sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. With the Bloomberg project, this approach has helped us to set a precedent in the international design community for how sustainability can be achieved in a commercial building.
“These wins are testament to the skills and hard work of our teams across the UK and I’d like to thank all of our assessors and design teams for their dedication to delivering the highest quality service and BREEAM ratings across all of our projects.”
The Bloomberg building is one of eight commercial buildings designed by Sweco to achieve BREEAM ‘Outstanding’, which also includes Five Pancras Square, home of Camden Council.
BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure and buildings. BREEAM-rated developments are more sustainable environments that enhance the well-being of the people who live and work in them, help protect natural resources and make for more attractive property investments.
