Georgina Buffham

Joined Sweco:

September 2019

Team:

@one Alliance business unit, Infrastructure

Studied:

Civil and Environmental Engineering MEng

I chose Sweco because I really liked the way they put their employees first. Sweco has a really strong emphasis on self-development and intra-team relationships, and it’s not just on paper! The changes that are happening as a result of the People Plan, and the things I’ve been involved in as part of the Graduate Development Programme, make for a positive experience at Sweco.

Currently working on:

I’m currently working on a scheme for Anglian Water to replace the chlorine gas disinfection system at a water treatment works with a sodium hypochlorite system, which will make the site a safer place to work and live near.

Why I chose Sweco:

I chose Sweco because I really liked the way they put their employees first. Sweco has a really strong emphasis on self-development and intra-team relationships, and it’s not just on paper! What I enjoy most about my work:

I love learning and innovating and what’s great about my job is I get support to do that, whether that’s getting a new piece of software, having the time to develop a new calculation tool, or designing in new ways using different materials. I’ve been able to develop creative solutions for the client that save time, money and carbon because everyone I work with is so willing to share time and resources to help other people.

Highlight of the Graduate Development Programme:

The highlight of the Graduate Development Programme has got to be making a presentation to close out our first year. We went from having no idea what the presentation should be about, to presenting in front of the programme co-ordinators, president of Sweco and head of HR! It was incredibly stressful at times (15 people means 15 different opinions!) but, more often than not, there was a lot of joking around it was fantastic to learn about everyone’s experiences and strengths, and I formed some great relationships with an amazing group of people.

Advice to applicants:

Do what’s right for you and say “yes” to every opportunity!
