Sweco releases its Sustainability and Social Mobility plan

30 June 2020
As the leading consultancy in Europe in our area of expertise – planning and designing the sustainable communities and cities of the future – we have a great responsibility and opportunity to influence the development of a more sustainable society in our own business and through our client projects. Sustainability is at the core of our business and forms an integral part of our vision, business and 2023 strategy.

As part of this 2023 strategy, we are delighted to announce the release of our Sustainability and Social Mobility Plan which has been developed by Sweco and MLM, part of Sweco. Aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), the plan provides a detailed overview of our commitment to sustainability across the five strategic themes of Climate Action, CSR and Social Mobility, Delivering Sustainability for Clients, Reducing Environmental Impact and Good Health and Wellbeing. It also outlines our path to net zero emissions by 2030 and our commitment to advance social mobility in the communities in which we live and work.

“At Sweco, we aim to be a role model in sustainability, taking responsibility for and being part of the solution to society’s sustainability and carbon reduction challenges. With this plan, we show our commitment to do more to support and challenge our clients in delivering innovative solutions through expert consultancy and high-quality designs, as well as set ambitious internal targets,” said Max Joy, President of Sweco UK.

As signatories to the Pledge to Net Zero, we are committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030. We aim to deliver a greenhouse gas target in line with either 1.5°C or well below 2°C climate change scenario – covering buildings and travel as a minimum, report on our greenhouse gas emissions and progress against the target and publish at least one piece of research/thought leadership each year on practical steps to delivering an economy in support of net zero carbon.

As well as achieving our own net zero targets, we will continue to strive for the most efficient and effective ways to reduce carbon for our clients and are committed to make carbon reduction a contractual normality across the supply chain from designers to contractors.

Speaking of the plan, Mattias Goldmann, Chief Sustainability Officer for Sweco Group said, “I am proud to support the UK’s Sustainability and Social Mobility Plan. We always wanted the climate target to be part of the wider sustainability work, and all of this to be part of our story to the clients and other stakeholders. I also love how you show projects and clients, and how you clarify co-benefits with other SDGs. This is something I will spread with pride!”

This Sustainability and Social Mobility Plan also highlights the work we are currently doing to enhance social mobility and our commitment to further advance it by expanding our STEM programme, developing a CSR framework with a focus on local charity partnerships, ensuring our recruitment and retention activities are focused on equality, diversity and improved opportunities and influence our supply chain to expand their commitment to social mobility.
