Sweco Shortlisted for Highways Awards 2020

13 November 2020
We are delighted to announce that our active travel team in Scotland has been nominated for the “Best Use of New Technology” at the Highways Awards 2020. This award is the result of creating a virtual reality engagement tool to communicate our design of a new gold standard active travel corridor in Troon with a variety of key stakeholders, community groups and local schools.

Working in partnership with ARA and SUSTRANS, Sweco’s active travel team was able to present new ideas and opportunities by moving away from traditional communication methods and developing an easier, more engaging and exciting view of the design proposals. As effective community engagement contributes greatly to the success of a project, our active travel team was keen to explore new ways of sharing our designs for everyone to understand.

David Manson, Technical Officer from ARA said:

“To be shortlisted for such a prestigious award is a fantastic achievement. It is the result of being able to push the boundaries and aiming for the highest possible quality design. The project team of ARA and Sustrans led by Sweco has allowed an opportunity to work efficiently to raise our standards of what can be achieved from active travel projects in South Ayrshire. We look forward to the announcement of the award winners and the full construction of the project.”

Gauthier Vieille-Marchiset, Infrastructure Officer from Sustrans said:

“Loans to Troon is an excellent example of a Places for Everyone project. From the outset Sweco and ARA have pushed the ambition of this project to ensure a high-quality design that delivered segregated infrastructure and quality placemaking. Working in partnership with Sweco and ARA has been a privilege and Sustrans is delighted that Sweco’s progressive and effective approach to project delivery has been recognised in the “Best Use of New Technology” category."

Chris Fallen, Team Manager from Sweco said:

“Our team is delighted to have been nominated for an award at the Highway Awards 2020. The client challenged us to deliver an exceptionally high standard design whilst developing a new approach to engage with the local community and stakeholders. Our lead engineer, Alexander McNaughton, supported by the other Active Travel Team members, pushed the boundaries to produce an innovative and efficient solution. We are very proud of this achievement and hope that we can continue to push the boundaries on future active travel projects working in partnership with ARA and Sustrans.”

Winners will be announced at the Highways Awards on 28 January 2021. Best of luck to the Sweco team!
