Sweco is providing ongoing consultancy services relating to the Bran Sands landfill site permit and development. Services include landfill capping works, monitoring services, permit compliance, landfill gas infrastructure enhancement works and closure process support, including technical assistance for site risk and other assessments.
Client: York Potash Limited
Date: 2017 - ongoing
Since the purchase of Bran Sands by Sirius Minerals Plc in 2017, Sweco has provided site management duties, including quarterly and annual inspections, site walkovers and instruction as necessary, environmental monitoring and respective reporting, annual reporting, leachate treatment plant review and advice, ad-hoc drawings and technical notes as required.
Bran Sands, a 71-hectare landfill site, is in the post-closure stage and the permit does not allow waste disposal at the site. The site was originally licensed to accept controlled waste, including inert waste, general and biodegradable waste, metals, contaminated general wastes, asbestos and mineral waste from thermal processes.
Sweco has provided consultancy services to the site owner, Akzo Nobel (previously ICI) for the last 20 years to enable the engineered development and ultimate closure of the site. The new site operator, York Potash Ltd, commissioned us for the current range of services based on their recommendation.
Services we provided to Akzo Nobel included landfill capping, installation of gas utilisation system, leachate system reviews and updates, permit application and planning advice, permit compliance and support, entailing monitoring services and regulatory reporting, contract management and ongoing general advice.
Sweco delivered cost-effective services, including all monitoring and reporting requirements, and closure works that met all stakeholder requirements. We provided advice on site leachate management issues and a range of solutions which the client is trialling. Ongoing liaison with the regulatory authority plus our substantial experience and knowledge of the site eased and smoothed the closure process for the client.
