River Wall Condition Survey River Thames, London

River wall condition survey fronting the south bank of the River Thames.

KEY FACTS

Client: Broadgate Estates Ltd.

Service: Infrastructure

BACKGROUND

Sweco undertook a non-intrusive structural condition survey of an 850m length river wall fronting the south bank of the River Thames between London Bridge and Tower bridge. We also undertook a bathymetric and multi-beam sonar survey of the campshedding and river foreshore to detect defects of the permanently submerged structures without the need to use divers.

SOLUTION

A structural condition report was prepared, which highlighted various defects on both the river wall and the campshedding. Recommendations have been made to repair or monitor deficient sections of the wall and we are currently awaiting appointment for the next phase of works.

KEY FEATURES

  • Difficult access - tidal river, soft mud
  • Consideration of wave action from boats on a busy waterway
  • Liaison with authorities (Port of London, Metropolitan Police)
  • Use of engineering judgement to determine construction forms and stability of wall
