The site occupies a prominent position on New Fetter Lane and incorporates an assortment of 1960s buildings and cutting-edge sustainable architecture, creating a new destination between High Holborn and Fleet Street. Serving the ‘mid-town’ area of the City, it provides a substantial group of new retail and office buildings for 9,000 workers. The square itself covers approximately 65,000 sqm.
Sweco provided detailed design services for a series of pedestrian routes integrating the new development with the lanes and courts that characterise the adjacent Fleet Street conservation area. These focus on a new public space paved with quality materials of Pietra del Cardosa Italian schist and Galway grey limestone, creating a ground plain for a range of informal and managed activities. Collaboration with a water artist resulted in an innovative water feature and new artworks at the four entrances, which are integrated with a range of sculptural street furniture.
