A comprehensive understanding of road traffic legislation and engineering standards through a multi-disciplined approach allows our road safety consultants to offer continual advice and support throughout the design process, and undertake road safety audits on completed schemes.
Our road safety auditors are all certified to carry out audits on the United Kingdom strategic road network, and Trans European Road Network. The team are experienced on a wide range of projects from small developments, to major highway improvements and tram works.
Expert Sweco advice during the design process can greatly improve operational road safety standards, particularly for those more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
Our road safety services
We have worked on projects ranging from single pedestrian crossings for local authorities to trunk road and motorway schemes, including more recent innovations such as managed motorways.
The services we offer range from the design of road and junction geometry and drainage to various ancillary items such as vehicle restraint systems, traffic signs, road markings and utility management. Our teams have also drafted national design standards for use throughout the industry. Below are our core specialisms:
Road safety audits
National Road Network – Road Safety Audits on Trunk Road and Motorway schemes, including Smart Motorways
Local Authority Roads – Road Safety
Audits within the urban and rural environments, including tram works, pedestrianised/shared space, complex junction layouts and rural roads
Developments – Various sizes including residential, commercial and industrial
Collision investigation
Engineering, Roads Policing and Driver Training
National Roads Network – Collision analysis and investigation on Trunk Roads and Motorways, including complex junctions
Local Authorities – Analysis and investigation on all road types including urban and rural areas
Road safety engineering
Award winning engineers with extensive knowledge of road safety engineering and solutions, combined with practical knowledge and understanding of road user behaviour
Working within a multi-disciplinary environment the team lead on innovation and collaboration to develop safer solutions
Traffic engineering
Expert knowledge in traffic sign and road marking design and associated legislation. With signing and road marking experience on motorways, trunk and local roads, including new Smart Motorways
Operational road safety
Experienced in delivering safety in design through Operational Road Safety, with extensive experience of Highways England’s Operational Road Safety systems
Safety risk assessment
Assessing risks related to road layouts and their operation, in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges GG104 “Requirement for safety risk assessment”
CPD days
Delivery of Continued Professional Development for roads authorities, designers and contractors on various aspects of road safety including Driver Awareness, Road Safety Audit, Road Safety and Traffic Engineering
Our consultants draw on their in-depth knowledge of design standards, software and techniques to produce innovative – but most importantly – cost-viable design solutions for our clients.
Together with our clients and the collective knowledge of our 18,000 engineers, consultants and other specialists, we co-create solutions to address urbanisation, capture the power of digitalisation, and make our societies more sustainable. With international multi-disciplinary teams, we can call on the right insight and technical capability at the right time from across Buildings, Infrastructure, Advisory & Planning and Compliance.
