At Sweco UK, we work closely with local authorities, communities and stakeholders across the UK and Europe to design active travel infrastructure that places cycling at the heart of the public realm and supports the shift towards more sustainable modes of travel.
We believe cycling should be a safe, accessible, and attractive option for everyone. Our approach to cycling infrastructure design goes beyond just delivering high-quality technical solutions. We focus on creating liveable places that integrate seamlessly with their surroundings – connecting people to jobs, schools, nature, and each other. From strategic corridor planning to place-led design, our teams deliver end-to-end support that helps unlock the benefits of active travel.
Whether you’re creating a new cycling masterplan or integrating bike routes into a town centre regeneration scheme, our experts bring the technical skills, creative vision and local knowledge to deliver solutions that work for people AND the planet.
Integration with wider transport and land use strategies
Placemaking and landscape-led infrastructure
Accessibility and inclusivity assessments
Wayfinding and lighting
Community and stakeholder engagement
There are several benefits to increasing use of active travel modes including health benefits from exercise, better air quality from replacing car journeys with walking or cycling and economic benefits from relieved congestion and improved public health.
Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation
Cycling infrastructure design is playing a central role in the place-base infrastructure at the heart of Bradford’s regeneration.
Our cycling infrastructure highlights
Bradford City Centre Regeneration
We played a central role in transforming Bradford’s city centre by designing 2.4 km of new cycle lanes and pedestrianising 1.6 km of streets. Integrated green spaces—including a new public park—encourage active travel and help reduce car dependency.
Ayrshire Active Travel Improvements
To improve safety and connectivity, we designed a dedicated underpass beneath the A719, linking local routes to the National Cycle Network. We also delivered a new sensory garden and biodiversity area, creating a more welcoming and health-focused environment for walking and cycling.
Granton Waterfront, Edinburgh
As part of the wider regeneration programme, we delivered a comprehensive network of walking, wheeling, and cycling routes that enhance access to the waterfront and local amenities. Wider pavements, upgraded crossings, and thoughtful placemaking—including landscaping and public art—support an inclusive and vibrant public realm.
Manchester Active Mode Corridors
Supporting Manchester City Council’s ambition to become a net-zero city by 2038, we identified strategic improvements across six key routes to improve cycling and walking infrastructure—laying the foundation for a more connected, accessible and sustainable city.
Avedøreruten Cycle Superhighway, Copenhagen
We enhanced a 4.6 km stretch of this high-use commuter route with solar-powered LED lighting, improved tunnel illumination, safety railings, and cyclist amenities like service stations and counters. The result: a safer, more comfortable ‘green corridor’ for daily cycling.
Thornaby & Stockton Regeneration
Our designs support vibrant community connections with new traffic-free cycling routes along the River Tees. These link seamlessly with National Cycle Network Routes 1, 14, and 65—supporting both leisure and utility cycling in the region’s town centre and waterfront redevelopment.
Innovative Roundabout Design, Sheffield
We introduced the UK’s first Dutch-style roundabout and Voorrangsplein (priority square junction), giving cyclists dedicated, one-way, segregated tracks with priority over motor traffic at every entry and exit—bringing European best practice to British streets.
Working with our clients and key stakeholders we develop and implement schemes that provide better connections between people and their destinations, collaborating with the wider network of Sweco experts in countries such as The Netherlands, Norway, Denmark and Sweden who are leading the way in sustainable mobility.
Why Partner with Sweco for Cycling Infrastructure?
At Sweco, we specialise in the planning and delivery of high-quality cycling infrastructure that is safe, inclusive, and seamlessly integrated into wider transport networks. We understand that cycling is more than a mode of travel – it’s a driver of healthier communities, cleaner air, and more vibrant public spaces. That’s why our designs go beyond engineering. We help local authorities and developers create cycling networks that connect people to places while supporting broader goals like decarbonisation, placemaking, and economic regeneration.
From early-stage feasibility and strategy to detailed design and construction-ready packages, our teams deliver cycling infrastructure that works in the real world. We bring together technical expertise, urban design insight, and behaviour change thinking to shape environments that make cycling a natural and enjoyable choice.
As part of integrated sustainable transport strategies, our cycling solutions are designed to complement public transport and walking routes, helping to reduce car dependency and create low-carbon, multi-modal communities. Whether we’re delivering a segregated cycle lane in a dense urban centre or designing long-distance active travel corridors, we prioritise safety, comfort, accessibility and connectivity at every stage.
Sweco’s cycling infrastructure projects are already transforming towns and cities across the UK and Europe – supporting net zero ambitions, enhancing health and wellbeing, and creating more resilient, people-focused places.
Together with our clients and the collective knowledge of our engineers, consultants and other specialists, we co-create solutions to address urbanisation, capture the power of digitalisation, and make our societies more sustainable. With international multi-disciplinary teams, we can call on the right insight and technical capability at the right time from across Buildings, Infrastructure, Advisory & Planning and Compliance.
