Sweco aids Ukraine’s recovery with housing and water projects

Sweco has maintained an active presence in Ukraine since 1992 and our portfolio encompasses more than 70 projects.

Sweco is actively participating in the country’s rebuilding efforts by providing expertise in critical infrastructure projects, including securing water supplies, modernising wastewater treatment and supporting the construction of housing for internally displaced people (IDPs). Collaborating with local consultants and adhering to national and European standards, Sweco’s recent work focuses on enhancing resilience, improving living conditions and ensuring sustainable solutions in communities affected by the war.

Supporting housing for Ukraine’s displaced

Sweco leads the procurement and supports the construction of housing in six cities in western Ukraine, aiming to quickly provide shelter, heating, water and electricity for millions of IDPs in the country. In response to the war’s impact, the EU finances housing, schools, hospitals and infrastructure repairs in liberated Ukrainian cities.

Sweco ensures compliance with European procurement norms as project organisations procure contractors for new EU-funded IDP housing in these six municipalities.

The project started in February 2023 and continues for two years, with Sweco collaborating with local Ukrainian consultants. Nefco, the Nordic Green Bank, is the client.

Enhancing water quality for 220,000 residents

Sweco is actively contributing to Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts by securing potable water for the 220,000 residents of Kremenchuk. Specialists in urban water engineering, process engineering, hydrology and environmental impact analysis are delivering expertise in a project financed by Swedfund, the Swedish State’s development finance institution.

The aim is to support Kremenchuk City Council and its water company in improving and securing water quality and distribution. Sweco is assisting with fast-tracking the reconstruction and modernisation of the water supply system, focusing on drinking water intake, purification, quality monitoring and process automation.

The project includes a feasibility study meeting financial conditions from development banks, that addresses technical, environmental, social and economic aspects while identifying water resources and balancing supply for the next 25 years. The result will be a more resilient, energy-efficient drinking water infrastructure.

The Sweco project started in November 2023 and is set to be completed by August 2024.

Rebuilding water systems in Mykolaiv and Odesa

Sweco is taking part in two additional projects funded by Swedfund to secure drinking water and modernise wastewater treatment in Kobleve and Dobroslav communities, in the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions.

Specialists from Sweco provide expertise in wastewater treatment, water engineering, hydrology and environmental impact assessments.

The goal is to support the communities in the analysis and preparations necessary to improve and secure water quality, purification and capacity. In Kobleve, the focus will be on drinking water and wastewater treatment, while an entirely new wastewater treatment system is being planned for Dobroslav.

Sweco will further the efforts of the reconstruction and modernisation of the water supply system for drinking water intake, new/updated solutions for wastewater treatment and monitoring quality and process automation systems, where special attention is paid to energy efficiency and strict emissions requirements.

The result will be an improved, expanded and more resilient water infrastructure and municipal service for residents, including internally displaced persons. The Sweco projects started in June 2024 and are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025.
