Sweco was appointed to design a hard and soft landscape scheme for a stylish development of apartments alongside Regent’s Canal in Hackney, London.
Client: A2 Dominion
Location: Hackney, London
An understanding of the site’s important waterside location and history was key to developing an overall design strategy through the creation of different character areas to reflect unique aspects of the scheme. The striking design of the architecture and landscape was strongly influenced by the site’s historic associations with the timber industry which once thrived here. The external space design incorporates various finishes and styles of timber, including raised planters and seating, which extend out from the internal courtyards to the waterside frontage.
A communal courtyard forms an integral part of the scheme, acting as an internal street or shared zone, where pedestrian, vehicles, cyclists and meeting spaces co-exist. Roof gardens have been designed to provide play spaces and quiet contemplation areas for residents whilst also providing ecological benefits.
Located within a Conservation Area, it was imperative to preserve and enhance the unique townscape of the canal environment of the Wenlock Basin. Fundamental to the unique sense of place was the creation of a new trail delineated by mature trees along the edge of the basin which enabled filtered views of the waterside to be retained whilst enhancing the wildlife in the area.
