Project story
The redevelopment of the seafront provides an opportunity to create a revitalised town centre with a distinct character that will become a destination celebrating art, culture and food. The design and quality of the public realm is considered fundamental to creating a vibrant seafront, which can be accessed and enjoyed by all.
The proposals include a series of flexible, destination spaces linked by a unifying pedestrian priority street. The design seeks to reduce street clutter and reorders the streetscape by subtly demarcating spill out zones for local businesses and loading bays for out of hours use. A coherent suite of robust yet distinctive street furniture creates a strong sense of place and links to the local fishing culture through colour, materials and form. A wayfinding strategy using sculptural lighting elements visually draws users toward the seafront by activating the vistas of surrounding streets.
Measures to improve site permeability include the reconfiguration of the highway at Garrison Street and the introduction of traffic calming measures including 60mm kerb upstands, surface material changes and a super crossing.
