Making a splash in heritage-sensitive Building Control
We are thrilled to announce that our project, the Saltdean Lido in Brighton, has been selected as one of only 11 nation-wide projects to receive either a National AABC Conservation Award, or at least to be Highly Commended, at the 2025 CIVIC TRUST AWARDS ceremony to be held later this year.
This iconic Grade II listed Art Deco lido, originally designed by Architect R.W.H. Jones in 1938, has undergone a full refurbishment thanks to funding from National Heritage & Historic England – and it has been a privilege to work alongside the talented design team from R H Partnership Architects as we provided essential Building Control services for alterations and refurbishment of both the existing lido and associated buildings
As Sweco UK’s Paul Mayhew noted, “It’s been a really great experience helping to bring this iconic building back to life. The process was fluid as we collaborated closely with the client to ensure compliance with existing features while balancing the needs of the current building regulations.
It was fascinating to work on this existing building through the lens of the current building regulations. It has some really intricate architectural features, and I was particularly intrigued by the community library and the circular rotunda with existing helical stairs that runs through its centre from the ground floor café to first floor restaurant communal space.”
RHP’s Phillip Naylor adds: “Throughout the design stages Sweco were proactively engaged in determining how to address critical parts of the Building Regulations within an historic, listed and non-compliant building. Paul was a very important part of this process and through the construction stages his regular reporting greatly assisted in maintaining quality of workmanship and obtaining compliance during a very challenging build.”
The CIVIC TRUST AWARDS are one of the most prestigious and worthwhile awards to be issued in the UK, and amongst the quality of work recognise the social impact and benefits that projects bring to clients and local communities. Good luck to all nominees!
