Project Overview

British Land have been bringing forward proposals for the final plot of their Paddington Central Campus in Westminster. The 11-acre campus is a thriving development that currently provides a mix of homes, offices, leisure and retail next to Paddington Station. The proposals for 5 Kingdom Street provide a new office building, along with extensive new community, retail and leisure space. Improving permeability through the site was a key objective, as well as provision of exemplar cycle facilities to meet growing demand and encourage active travel.

 

The Solution

The Sweco team worked with the client’s design team to develop the transport strategy for the site; in particular significantly improving access for pedestrians and cyclists by provision of a new route through the building improving allowing access from the east and west. A new public garden is also being proposed at the heart of the building, aligning with the Mayor’s Transport Strategy and Healthy Streets Approach.

 

The Result and Benefit to Client

The design of the site will significantly improve the accessibility and permeability of the Paddington Central Campus from the west, allowing both pedestrians and cyclists with a route through the building. Sweco also advised on cost effective measures to improve the layout and appearance of the Harrow Road / Westbourne Terrace Road junction; this is a significant improvement to the existing situation which is uninviting for both pedestrians and cyclists.
