Project Overview

Sweco was appointed by Ayrshire Roads Alliance to create an improved cycle route within the Ayrshire seaside resort of Troon. Proposals included the creation of bioretention build outs along the line of the new widened cycleway with bold new street furniture and tree planting.

Our Approach

Sweco’s landscape architects together with the transport planning team developed a proposal for a cycleway as part of a route linking the village of Loans in South Ayrshire to the seaside resort of Troon. The existing footway was narrow and in very poor condition, the proposal included the widening of the footway to 3m and the creation of build-outs into the carriageway, these build-outs provide a bioretention function and include tree and shrub planting with decorative gravel and boulders. They also include block paving to support seating spaces which look out over a golf course.

A street furniture palette was developed, and a bold colourful approach was agreed upon with the client. Colour themes were proposed for the seating and railing elements accompanied by bright sculptural cycle parking points.

Delivery

Sweco’s landscape team prepared a series of visualisations for public consultation and then progressed the proposals to detailed design stage. Ayrshire Roads Alliance are now looking to extend the route incorporating the same palette of materials.
