Tranent

Windygoul South

A pre-planning meeting was held with East Lothian Council environmental health lead to provide them with an overview of the air quality assessment given the complexities. This resulted in positive feedback and acceptance of the assessment.

Summary

Location
Tranent, East Lothian
Client
Walker Group (Scotland) Ltd.
Type of project
Air Quality Assessment
UN SDGs
9 & 11

The challenge

  • Modelling of sensitive location due to medical waste Incinerator at permitted medical research facility
  • Modelling of sensitive location due to back up Diesel Generators at permitted medical research facility
  • Assessment of both short term and long-term objectives
  • Increased traffic through congested Tranent High Street
  • Onsite combustion sources subject to Medium Combustion Plant Directive
  • Modelling of a range of pollutants required including Cadmium, Thallium and heavy metals

The solution

  • Liaising with client, East Lothian Council and negotiations with SEPA to agree final scope of the assessment.
  • Air quality assessment undertaken to determine site suitability for residential units due to proximity to a permitted medical research facility with onsite combustion sources.
  • Air quality assessment undertaken to determine the impact from the proposed development on nearby existing sensitive receptors and concerns from East Lothian Council regarding additional traffic through Tranent High Street.
  • Modelling undertaken for a range of pollutants including Cadmium, Thallium and heavy metals following Environment Agency Guidance in line with the Industrial Emissions Directive.
  • Construction Dust Risk Assessment to determine risk from demolition and construction activities onsite and to determine the level of mitigation required.
  • Air quality involved in the masterplan design to influence the proximity of housing to nearby medical research facility.
  • Odour risk assessment
