Bradford: a model for place-based planning

The regeneration of Bradford is transforming the city centre through a transport-led, wellbeing-first approach to placemaking. By bringing together transport planning, public realm, environmental and urban design expertise, the project is creating a more accessible, sustainable and inclusive centre, where movement, place and people are considered as one connected system.

Rather than delivering piecemeal interventions, the scheme establishes a coherent movement strategy for the city centre. Key streets are being pedestrianised, while improved walking, cycling and bus infrastructure supports more sustainable travel choices. Traffic-dominated areas are being reimagined as safe, attractive and welcoming public spaces, complemented by pocket parks, street trees, planting and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems.

This integrated transport planning approach delivers benefits across the wider city. By prioritising active and public transport, it reduces reliance on private cars, supports lower carbon emissions and improves air quality, biodiversity and road safety. At the same time, a better-connected, greener and more vibrant city centre strengthens local businesses, supports culture and social activity, improves health and wellbeing, and provides a foundation for long-term economic growth.
