Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Consultancy

Sweco UK’s Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) team are leaders in developing, supervising and commissioning the application of technology in infrastructure projects to improve safety and mobility. Our ITS experts have worked on a range of projects from single technology site deployments on local junction improvement schemes to scheme wide deployments on nationally significant highway infrastructure projects.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) is the umbrella term covering a range of technologies including processing, control, communication and electronics that aims to improve network management primarily through reliable real-time travel information.

A thorough understanding of motorway communication design standards, achieved through a multi-disciplinary approach, enables our ITS consultants to provide design expertise and support through the entire project lifecycle, from initial design phases to construction completion and project closeout.

Our ITS team has considerable experience and knowledge in ITS related infrastructure design, be it on the strategic road network or local authority networks, right from the concept stage through preliminary design, detailed design and construction.

Motorway Communications

Sweco’s ITS team have specific depth of knowledge in the design, modification and implementation of motorway communication systems including:

  • Comprehensive understanding of national design standards ( / NDX)
  • Motorway Incident Detection and Automatic Signalling (MIDAS) for queue protection and congestion monitoring
  • Emergency Roadside Telephones (ERTs)
  • Remotely Operated Temporary Traffic Management Signals (ROTTMS)
  • Highways Agency Digital Enforcement and Compliance System (HADECS) enforcement
Site Data Design

Sweco’s ITS team includes industry expertise in (defining signal geometry, roadside device address allocation and data input for control centres / systems), executing and implementing site data changes within National Highways systems.

This is a key element in commissioning roadside devices for operators at National Highways control centres.

Contract Documentation

Sweco’s ITS team are experienced in the preparation of documentation to support project development including:

  • Technical reports
  • drawings and specifications for inclusion in Works Information
  • Departure from Standards applications including National Highways’ Departure Approval System (DAS).
  • Preparation of Designer’s Risk Assessments
  • Pre-Construction Information support
  • Bill of Quantities compilation National Highways’ Project Control Framework (PCFs) product preparation.
  • direct purchase (bulk purchase) forecast orders using National Highway’s People, Finance and Procurement (PFP) system
Safety Risk Assessment

Through our in-depth knowledge of transport technology Sweco’s ITS team are experienced at assessing risks related to technology layouts and their operation, in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges GG104 “Requirement for safety risk assessment”.

Project Management

Our team has experience in planning, managing and successfully delivering ITS-related projects including forecasting, budgeting, programming and risk management. Working within multi-disciplinary environments the team lead on innovation and collaboration to develop safe, cost effective solutions.
