More about our rail consultant services

Our wide experience covers rail projects involving structures such as bridges, buildings, culverts, retaining walls, gantries and ancillary structures. We design new structures and are experienced in examination, assessment, reporting and designing repairs to existing builds.

Our excellent relationship with infrastructure owner asset management and engineering assurance employees brings added reassurance to our clients that projects are approved with ease. We use our knowledge of structural failure and deterioration to design effective solutions to complex and challenging situations. We use the same knowledge during the design of new structures to ensure designs are economical and result in high performing assets with  longevity.

Stations & buildings

Sweco has been carrying out consultancy works at stations   for a great many years, both for Network Rail and Train Operating Companies (TOCs). Our engineers adapt their knowledge to multiple situations, materials and challenges to produce sustainable results for our clients. We understand that stations are part of the public image for the railway and that the needs of passengers and other customers are paramount at these important revenue-earning sites.

Typical projects we’ve undertaken at stations include car parks, footbridges, forecourt remodelling, platform works (rebuilds, extensions, refurbishment, regauging) and station rebuilds. We have also played a major role in projects involving the introduction of new train fleets, where careful consideration of train stopping location is paramount.

Sweco is widely recognised as providing a pragmatic and fresh approach to infrastructure design. We understand the critical role that infrastructure assets play in people’s lives. Our diverse range of services enables us to offer a comprehensive package, from project inception through to construction and then asset management.

We have extensive experience in both lineside and non- lineside infrastructure, where our civils and buildings expertise can be demonstrated. We use the latest design and analysis software and where appropriate, BIM platforms, to develop efficient analyses and designs. We collaborate with all stakeholders and are conversant in working effectively with third parties such as the Environment Agency, highway authorities, local authorities and statutory sewerage undertakers.

Our aim is to deliver infrastructure designs that are economical, innovative and safe to construct and use, and sustainable. We use expertise throughout Sweco to achieve these aims. We have rail experience in depots, drainage, freight handling facilities, roads, marine works, scour mitigation, stations and undertrack crossings (UTX).

Our ethos is to maintain a sustainable environment together with social and economic considerations, and we always consider the site constraints through every aspect of a project. We understand the complex relationship between the built and natural environment and we have the environmental expertise required to influence the development of infrastructure in the future.
